The traditional converter’s shell is made of carbon steel. There are several sections of catalyst beds installed horizontally in converter and separated by completely sealed boards which are lined with heat insulting material in order to avoid deformation and heat loss. The catalysts are contained in metal grating. The ceramic balls are used as the bottom of grating to avoid damage caused by over temperature of catalysts during operation. The part for containing catalysts is often lined with heat insulating brick. The steel distribution plates are installed at the inlet of the converter to prevent the burner gas from blowing the catalyst beds and let the burner gas well-distributed in catalyst beds. In recent years, large converters are made of stainless steel because of its outstanding mechanical property.
